True meaning and value…

Opening the world of thought
does not depend on systems or psychologies
but on direct experience.

If we can communicate with our mind,
we can open thoughts through thoughts;
we can interpret without an interpreter.

The starting point is
to see that we are not free,
that we are trapped
in the field of emotions and thoughts.

The more deeply we understand this,
the more easily we can cut through
the bonds that restrict us.

Eventually, we can directly touch
the meaning of knowledge,
finding the source of its vitality and abundance,
and with it, true meaning and value.

This discovery is like coming home.

Embracing the energies of emotions

Once we realize that energy appears in different ways,
we can embrace the energies of the emotions
and bring them into our meditative state.

We can learn to relax within these energies
when we no longer divide up our experiences into positive and negative.

Then the emotions are welcome,
because we understand that they are teachings;
the emotions themselves can reveal their own meaning,
without our needing to look beyond them.

Awareness that protects ourselves and others…

Our responsibility is to maintain a sense of awareness
that can protect both ourselves and others.

If we are not careful, instead of helping,
we may make the emotional imbalance even worse.

Emotions, being in substance pure energy,
tend to `soak up’ any energy that is directed towards them.

It works both ways:
while our own energy may stir up the emotion,
we may also be `infected’ by the negative energy.

The energy seems to intensify itself,
as if it had a life of its own.

Handling intense emotions…

Handling intense emotions is not easy;
emotions project a form of energy
which makes it difficult for anyone near
to maintain a balanced perspective.

So before we try to help,
it is important to know how to sustain
a gentle and compassionate attitude.

When people are caught up in emotional turmoil,
they are very sensitive and vulnerable;
they can easily sense underlying emotions
and can also easily be hurt by misunderstandings.

Therefore, when we want to help,
we should be especially mindful
of the energy that we ourselves project.

A more open way of life…

The best route to a more open way of life is the practice of stillness.

Stillness comes as a result of loosening up long-standing tensions.

We slowly smooth out, and the oscillations of our senses and emotions, bit by bit, subside.

Everything becomes relaxation

Once we tap relaxation,
we learn to operate sensations and emotions
with a playful, open attitude, and
everything becomes relaxation.

We know that within every feeling or sensation
there is the pure energy
– that both `negative’ and `positive’ emotions
are flexible manifestations of energy,

Beyond emotional reactions

Everything is judged in terms of how it relates to a person’s emotions.

It is quite possible for a human being,
even one who is not enlightened,
to have goals, commitments, and personal convictions
beyond merely emotional reactions and considerations.
