Moments of appreciation
can help us practice sensitivity
without grasping or avoiding experience.

We can find this appreciation
when we stop to consider
even the simplest things.

They can move us so deeply;
the gleam of sunlight on green grass,
the smell of food cooking –
all these ordinary blessings
can become sources of inspiration.

Feeling a cool breeze on our face,
we do not have to try to catch the wind;
we can allow it to play out and follow its nature.

We can appreciate the soft touch,
and do not need to fear
its gradual easing into stillness.

Deep and enduring changes

The interplay between mind and body is far from simple;
the human set-up has many layers
that work together to produce
even our most basic and mundane experiences.

The physical level includes
the interplay of matter, energy, and space;
the distinctive characteristics of our sense faculties;
the operations of our internal organs;
the function of the breath.

While we can distinguish many different levels
or aspects to the human set-up,
they are in reality profoundly interconnected.

It is for this reason that yogic practice,
which can activate all the layers at once,
can make deep and enduring changes
in our experience.

Our way of being alive

The body’s five principal senses constitute our vehicle – our way of being alive.

They connect us to the physical world,
allowing us to find our way in space and time;
they receive the world outside of us on our behalf.

Like party hosts, our eyes, ears, noses tongues, and skin
bring guests into the home of the body,
introducing us to visual forms, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes;
these are crucial ingredients for our memories, thoughts, and feelings.

A pleasant party atmosphere comes from
the positive interactions of the hosts and guests.

When relations are good, we have good parties;
in experience, it is the same.

When our minds and bodies coordinate,
we are comfortable, healthy, and happy.

Opening up startling alternatives

logo dancer burgundy-greenAs human beings, we come to know the world through many filters and structures, ranging from the shapes of our sense organs to the cultures in which we are raised.

Our responses to the world around us, once fresh and spontaneous, gradually get stuck in channels of habit, hardened into place by years of repetition.

Our personalities, too, begin to harden, as we allow ourselves to be governed by these habits and the likes and dislikes they have helped to put into place.

Yogic practice has the potential to alter greatly this channelized character of experience; exercising body strongly in this way opens up sometimes startling alternatives to ordinary approaches to life.

It generates an effect that is immediately tangible at the feeling and energy level.

We have healing qualities within

we are well equipped to deal with a broader range of situations,
even unfamiliar ones.

When we are faced with the new,
we can respond creatively.

Reaching into our own depths,
we can combine ingredients to produce a beautiful experience.

The flavor of what is happening changes.

The clarity and joyfulness we create
show us our situation in a new light,
and agitation subsides.

It is not necessary to go hunting around for healing.

We have healing qualities within ourselves.

Our own natural resource
