Moving restlessly from experience to experience, we seek pleasure and try to avoid suffering. But even while pleasant feelings are fresh, they are unstable. In every situation enjoyment is eventually followed by disappointment.
Precious new possessions gradually lose their attraction; a relationship with a new love sours as we come to know the idiosyncrasies of our partner. Even our children, for whom we hope so much, fail to meet our expectations.
We may seek wealth and success, hoping they will solve our problems, and be drawn into projects, thoughts, and emotions that consume both time and energy.
But our fantasies, however colorful, are seldom realized. Even if we make many sacrifices and reach our goals, something still seems lacking.
