In reflecting on these matters, it is clear that the teacher bears the primary responsibility, for the student cannot be expected to understand what is at stake.
If the teacher does not fully prepare the student, explaining the background of the initiation, the nature of the commitments being made, and the importance of honoring those commitments, the student cannot be expected to think seriously about whether this is an appropriate step.
Yet the texts state clearly that once a student has taken on the vows and commitments that an initiation imposes, there is no easy way to `give them back’.
