Many individuals drawn to Tibetan Buddhism seem to be especially interested in rituals and initiations, which they associate with the esoteric aspect of the teachings.
Having read or heard a little about Tantra, they arrive at Tibetan centers or attend teachings for the express purpose of receiving empowerment and initiation from lamas whom they otherwise know little about.
Observing this, my students and friends have often asked me why I do not offer initiations. Sometimes the question is put differently: Do I believe that participating in rituals on this basis has value for new Dharma students?
