If Westerners truly wish to shape their own trustworthy form of Buddhism, let them resolve to devote extensive effort to study and practice of the tradition.
Let them learn through their own experience and reflection the inner meaning of the teachings, the significance of the language found in the texts, and the power of the symbols and rituals.
Until this happens, it seems better to keep the tradition as it has been handed down essentially intact.
