…stay within the first moments of experience.

Tarthang Tulku, Gesture of Balance

When we’re learning the core skills of Kum Nye – not to comment on experience, not to report back to ourselves, not to judge –  this is what we are aiming for: to stay within the first moments of experience. This, Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche says in the chapter The Nature of Mind, is how we free our minds from what he calls dualistic experience.

What is dualistic experience? The mind commenting, the mind reporting back, the mind judging, that is the mind experiencing what is happening by commenting on it, which creates the dynamic duo.

Our own personal dynamic duo is not Batman and Robin, or Elmo and Kermit – we have The Doer and The Reporter. One of these is not necessary (in fact is detrimental) to be good at life. Guess which…?

Imagine Kermit the Frog commenting on everything you think, do, and feel?
